i was in karachi around the same time and boy do i know what youre talking about. the sunni/shia clashes started the morning we arrived. we got home at 3am and the "mullah" at masjid my cousins go to for hifz was gunned down at fajr on the steps of the masjid and then the riots started. it was so surreal.
I saw the english speaking desis who wore american clothes getting better service than us folk who decided to wear shalwar khamiz. There were soo many girls on my plane who looked like they were headed to a fashion show it was ridiculous. 2 of them kept changing clothes during the trip, my brother and I were keeping track of their wardrobe changes lol.
But what I saw in our area of Karachi was something that I didnt expect, especially after my trip in 99. the majority of women in our area were full jilbab and niqab'd out when they went out in the streets. last time i went, they made fun of me for wearing hijab and this time, the bazaar and the streets were a flood of black overgarments. And the majority of my cousins (as well as the other kids in the neighborhood) had been taken out of public schools and put into dar al uloom Alim(a) programs or hifz schools. I was so proud of them.
I dont want to take anymore attention away from your wonderful journal entries so I'll end with this last thought: there is most definitely a revolution brewing in Pakistan, even if it is only in my area of karachi. you could feel it in the air that everyone is growing restless as time passes.
