Toyota Dealer Deception

Today I decided to visit the Manhattan Toyota (http://www.toyotaofmanhattan.com/) dealership located on 645 11th Ave. I was responding to the following advertisement:

toyotaad/

I saw the fine print and shady wording being used. It states it has 0%
deals for up to 60 months. In the fine print it says only on select
models. So my wife calls in and specifically asks if Camy Hybrids are
available at 0% apr for 60 months). So the sales person says come right
in tomorrow and schedules an appointment with the manager (Genie).
When I get there around noon time Genie is busy and asks me to talk to
Jean, a West African gentleman who seemed pretty likable.

Right off the bat I tell Jean that I am only interested if they are
offering the Camry Hybrid at 0% apr for 60 months. He first takes us to the showroom to look at the car. A Muslim finance guy says salaam to us and tells Jean to come to him if he needs anything and he wants to take care of us. Jean takes the advert
and goes to discuss it with someone. He comes back with a sheet which
more or less looked like this (http://www.leestoyota.com/finance_specials.htm?bhcp=1).
So he says the Camry, Hybrid in particular is not part of this specific
sale. So then he looks into my credit and comes back praising my credit
score and says that maybe they can do something because of my great
credit history. He asks me if I want to make a downpayment and I agree
on paying $500 as a down payment. Then I go for Jummah (Friday Prayers)
and come back.

Subway Series Shea Experience

I was able to take the wife to see Game 2 of the Subway Series this Saturday at Shea. It was a real fun game to watch and experience live. Mets won 10 to 7. There were many yankee fans in attendance which made the back and forth chants interesting.

David Wright blasted home runs in first two at bats. Then he was intentionally walked his next 3 batting appearances. Everytime they chose to walk him, the fans chanted: Yankees Suck! Yankees Suck! That took the cake for me. I loved it! When the game was over the chants continued while the mass mob was exiting the stadium, on the ramp all you heard was a thunderous echo of a chant which went a little something like this: Sweep, Sweep, Sweep!

I overpaid $50 per ticket on stubhub (including commission and shipping) but I think it was well worth it. Thank God the weather complied. Sitting in the upper deck towards the back does have its caveats (a little roof to block out the rain!)

One thing that annoyed was that we had seats in the Non-alcoholic section, but all these people were buying beers from inside and bringing them to our section. May Allah Guide them. Shea should be a little more strict about that. I also had real problems trying to find kosher hot dogs even though their site does say they have them in some select places. Fan services pointed us to section 12 in Mezzanine, but we didn't find anything there. Can't wait till the day they have halal hot dogs.

I'll put some pics up when I get a chance.

Beating the Odds Lotto in the Ghetto

Man... today I was at associated grocery store which is located in a strip mall across the street from my building. I went grocery shopping with my wife. I was contemplating how Starrett City has evolved over the years from being a false ideal of Utopian white middleclassdom to becoming increasingly section-8. I knew things were starting to get ghetto when a Chinese Fast food joint and a foot locker came to the shopping center. But that's cool, but whats not cool is what you can find in the associated supermarket. In the last aisle there is a special line for Lotto. Not only is there a long lotto line, there are 3 huge vending machines for instant scratch lotto games. These machines take 1 dollar bills for half a million in prize money, 5 dollars for 1 million, 10 dollars for 2 million, 20 dollars for 500 million. While in line I noticed mostly older African American men and women paying for their groceries and then taking the remainder of their money to these machines to buy tickets. This one man was putting in all these different one dollar bills and the machine just wasn't accepting it. I went up to him and told him That's a blessing that it won't take it, that's your hard earned money don't waste it . He replied But I might win . I responded by saying Use your money on yourself, you worked hard for that money . He respond again by saying but I might win . I just shook my head hoping others listening would think about what was happening in front of them. My wife commented by saying this is a vicious cycle. What I understood from her comment was that these people are already...

chanting for him to go to TNA. Furthermore, several people said that
his wife Sonya, who was in attendance at the PPV, was chanting TNA
along with some other fans. Now you can see him in a TNA Ring! Enjoy :)

Web 2 point 0 roundup

For those who don't know [[Web 2.0]] is different from ww2 (Internet 2). Basically this is what it is: Internet Services taking the Internet experience to the next level. The latest phenomenon of social networking sites like digg (http://www.digg.com), del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us), youtube (http://www.youtube.com), flickr (http://www.flickr.com), meebo (http://www.meebo.com) are examples of web 2.0 sites. It's not a technical protocol standardized by the W3C consortium (http://www.w3.org), but its rather a way to seperate old school websites from todays far more useful futuristic web technologies.

I've blogged about RSS feeds before. Surprisingly I see technical people who still haven't caught on! I would suggest making an account at netvibes (http://www.netvibes.com), a self proclaimed web 2.0 site which can be used to bring all of your internet needs together in one page, within one browser window!. The next step would be adding feeds from each of the websites you visit on a daily basis. Just click add feed, then enter the URL of your favorite websites. Most websites which are up to date will have RSS feeds set to be autodiscovered so ittl pick it up right away. You can try major sites like CNN, NPR etc. Another cool thing about netvibes is that it has set module which you can just add on. I can check my gmail, yahoo mail, aolmail, receive my ims on aim, msn, icq, yahoo, jabber (via meebo) all through modules. So I dont have to open up all these websites to access what I need to access.

I like the AJAX based netvibes alot. For the past few months I have been fighting with myself to figure out what the best way is to read my feeds. Because netvibes allows you create tabs, drag and drop I can easily create different tabs for all the different...

Black Friday in the Hood

I got a call at 3:30 AM from a friend who I had asked to go directly to the outdoors strip mall where a Staples, Circuity City, and Target are located. He said Yo, there's already 20 people on line (at staples), and theres over 100 at Circuit City . We had been doing this for the past 3 years at the same outdoor mall, so we knew exactly what to expect. We had already made our shopping lists with the help of bfads.net (http://www.bfads.net). We had our eyes set on the external 400 Gig Western Digital hard drive for $99 after rebates. And the 200 Gig internal for only $19.99 after rebates. My sister had asked me to get her the 32 inch Mag LCD HDTV which was on sale for about $499 after rebates. This was the first time that Staples was going to be selling dirt cheap TVs and they also had laptops.

In the previous years the line at Staples would be quite civilized and would only attract the geeky types. This year it was hooded out. While there were 20-30 people in front of us to start, when time came for the door to open about 30 more people tried to jump the line and come right in. The last half hour there were alot of disputes taking place. One hood lady was like... Get up out of my space.. this ain't no Internet Sh*t, this ain't no myspace.com! . Another Jamaican woman yelled Open Dee Damn Doors . One person who was cutting was called out by this lady who wasn't having it. She was pointing at him, saying you wasnt here in the beginning! . So then he proclaimed.. I Just want my TV and I'm...

Mission HDTV and Cassette tape to MP3 conversion

I recently got OptimumOnline's triple play package and speed booster. OOL has built in HDTV channels, over 22 free HDTV channels for free with its service. To get these channels you have to make sure you have the HDTV cable box and not the regular one. I don't have a HD compatible TV, but I figured why not get a TV Tuner card for my PC which can handle HDTV. Being a ATI fan I started researching the ATI HDTV card. (http://ati.amd.com/products/hdtvwonder/index.html) It turned out that this card only supports OTA HDTV, in other words over the air transmissions. It comes with this ugly Antenna (http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/productimage/15-116-310-06.jpg) which picks up HD signals. These signals are stronger in larger cities. HDTV technology is quickly being adopted in the US and in the future the old TV transmissions will become obsolete and will be replaced by HDTV. So someone can get this TV Tuner and get HDTV for free without ever buying a HDTV. In my case this didn't help me much because I am already paying for OOL and want to take advantage of my built in HDTV service. So then I start looking at other HDTV cards. It turned out that the signal which will be provided by OOL will be a digital signal and most of these HDTV cards can only handle either OTA or Analog Cable. There are two major types of HDTV signals either ATSC or QAM. I asked OOL what type their signal is and they told me that its QAM (the dude was pronouncing it as quam).

Fusion III QAM HD TV Tuner (http://www.byopvr.com/displayarticle117.html), and the other is called MyHD PCI HDTV Tuner (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=201695364 SearchEngine=Shopper SearchTerm=201695364 Type=PE Category=Comp Gad=0 dcaid=15889). The Fusion III is scarcely available while MyHD can be bought on buy.com for about $150. The...

RVD Sabu arrest leads to dropped Belts

[[WWE]] a publically traded company has forced [[Rob Van Dam]] to drop both of his Championship belts after he was arrested in Ohio (http://www.newsvine.com/_news/2006/07/03/276713-pro-wrestlers-caught-with-drugs-in-ohio) along with Sabu a few days ago. They were caught (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-vZLmd4LF0) Riding Dirty with 18 grams of Marajuana and some pain killers. RVD was known to be a Weed Smoker (may Allah guide him). The WWE had a meeting with both wrestlers after they were released on bail. Then they had RVD drop both titles. The WWE belt was dropped to Edge, and the ECW title was dropped to Big Show. There is even talk about their contracts being completely terminated. What I don't get is why did the WWE play on the fact that he is a weed smoker in order to promote their products. For example This t-shirt (http://shopzone.wwe.com/newimages/images/97027X.JPG) on sale at the WWE Shop has the phrase: Flying Higher than ever . On a recent promo RVD said.. I gotta get rolling . On last years One Night Stand Paul Heyman straight up came to the ring and said he just had smoked a joint with Van Dam . RVD on his site said he was celebrating 420 (April 20th- Natl Weed Smoking Day) with Samoa Joe, a TNA Wrestling Talent. One of RVD's Monikers is RVD:420 because I just smoked your a-- . Which he stated on ONS 2005. On his DVD he also has some jokes about smoking up. Like when Coach asks him how high does he get.... when he does his 5 star frog splash. So I think its very hipocritical of the WWE to reap the benefits of pushing a Weed Smoker to the top (getting weed smoking fans behind him). And then when he gets arrested, letting him crash and burn....

The Road to Guantanamo Review

Abu Ghraib (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_prison) or Guantanamo Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guant%C3%A1namo_Bay_detainment_camp). Opression is opression, and no person deserves to be brutalized mentally or physically... especially when they havent been given any due process. When you watch the film The Road to Guantanamo you can't help but wonder how these kids had so many close calls where they could have been killed before they even made it to Camp X-ray. My sister (http://www.madepi.blogspot.com/) did her thesis on the legitimacy of the captured individuals being given the status of enemy combatants and if that really is enough to evade international standards of the treatment which is to be given to prisoners. After re-reading her paper for her a few times I got to thinking how in the world can we just sit here and discuss these riddiculous claims which implies that we are above all laws, because we are strong enough to break all of them and no one can take us into account. Our rationale as a country is based on arrogance, stubborness, and a dash of racism and religious intolerance.

RVD Mr Grand Slam

At ECW One Night Stand 2006 [[RVD]] Finally achieved what he has deserved for a very long time. He has become the WWE Champion. Although now it looks like they are making him hold two titles. One is going to be the official ECW title and he is going to hold the WWE Title. Now that he is on the ECW Brand (moved from RAW) I guess that means they will make him drop the WWE title and make it go back to RAW, so they can have contention for titles on each show. The way in which he won was pretty wack, but from a story line viewpoint it was brilliant. Edge interfered by spearing Cena through a table. Since Cena was getting alot of heat, they made him come out more aggressive. If he got beat up (like he should have) it would have really hurt his fan base and that wouldn't help the company since his merchandise really sells. The ECW fans were vicious, they chanted You can't wrestle!, You can't wrestle! . After he did a impressive power move they chanted: You still suck!, You still suck! . When he did his patented moves they chanted: Same old Sh--, Same old Sh-- . I was dissaponted that RVD didn't unveil any new moves. I wish the finish was something spectacular. I also wish he showed off some of his great in ring wrestling skills, but then again Cenas style would not compliment that. The new ECW show on scifi is kinda weak. It's too short only an hour long and I feel that they don't have enough wrestlers on the roster. Btw at One night stand the hottest sign was hanging from the balcony which read If Cena Wins we Riot ....

Why We Fight Review

Military Industrial Complex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_industrial_complex) you know it would be pretty damn relevant. Although the film starts off with his quote, the focus of the film was not 1961. The film shows how his fears came to fruiition and has reached its heights today. For many people who watch political films and documentaries or listen to lefty radio (http://www.wbai.org), it will not come as a surprise to them. Although the details which are presented will make you think. For example they make the point that three quarters of a trillion dollars is enough motivation to constantly stay engaged in one military conflict or another. The bottom line is the bottom line.

Why dont they make fun of Islam on the Simpsons?

Anyone who watches the simpsons knows that they mock almost all religions. But they stay very clear of mocking Islam. Alot of people, both Muslims and non-muslims have asked the question: why not mock Islam too (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en q=why+dont+they+make+fun+of+islam+on+the+simpsons btnG=Google+Search). The author of The Gospel according to the Simpsons. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0664224199/sr=8-1/qid=1147879674/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-0208972-6741467?%5Fencoding=UTF8) (a book I own) guesses that it is because the writers that are represented on the staff poke fun of each other and at themselves. And that possibly there is no Muslim on staff. Some others speculate that the reason is because Muslims can't take a joke thus they need to tip toed around. They often cite rioting due to the publishing of the cartoons attempting to demonize Muhammad as proof.

I tried to post my theory on someones blog but their authentication system was messed up so I'll just share what I wante to say here:I'm a Muslim... and I think I can shed some light as to why the Muslim world can't handle a joke about Islam. First of all you have to understand that the Satire that is used in the West is part of Western culture and has its roots in western thought and philosophy. The East (or the other side of the world), esp the Muslim world does not take raunchy, balsphemous, and other topics lightly. Aside from being sinful this kind of humor is corrosive to all moral sensibilities. The Danish Cartoons were seen as a direct assault on prophet Muhammad and by extension on Islam. Muslims do not like how Jesus (also a prophet of islam) is mocked in the west. We believe the prophets were chosen by God and were the best of mankind so out of respect we would never mock them. This includes Adam, Moses, Noah, Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad and...

6/17/04 - Entry 10 Pakistan Journal

This is the tenth journal entry in a series of about 15 which I wrote
over a three week period while I was in Pakistan this summer. If you go
to the category Pakistan Journal (index.php?option=com_content task=category sectionid=4 id=20 Itemid=26)
you can see all the entries. There are some really interesting
experiences and observations which I make throughout the trip(or well
at least in my opinion).

6/17/2004

After waking up we headed straight for my cousins house. Her
siblings all migrated to the U.S.
and Canada. Her
husband owns a company which exports jeans. He had a really huge house which he
shares with his parents and siblings. He had an armed guard who opened the gate
for us. He didn’t have a wimpy pistol, he had a huge semi-automatic rifle. Her
husband was not very talkative, although he did seem really religious. We took
pictures with her cute little kids. Then we went to two of my aunts homes which
were inside of a masjid. One of my aunts husbands is the imam of the masjid.
From their house you could climb up into the tower from where the adhaan is
given. We went up there to chill. There was a really nice breeze there, since
it was high up. I also finally met my cousin Atif who is studying to become an
alim. My mother had told him a lot about me. So he asks me a lot about what I
am doing and what the organization that I work with stands for. I guess he
wanted to know my aqeedah was, ha… or if I was a part of a sect or something. I
also asked him about what he was studying. He is Hafiz-ul Qur’an and he studied
multiple tafaseer. It turned out that in fiqh they were studying only Hanafi
fiqh. And the tafseer that they studied were from various Indian scholars. It
sort of made sense, but at the...

Anver Beigs Vision

The vision behind the Mirror International Weekly could have been best understood by engaging in a few minutes of interaction with its founder Br. Anver Beig. Through brief discussion you would have learned that his intention was clear: To provide a voice for Muslims to be heard. For those who missed out on getting to know this tremendous figure, one can still share in understanding his mission by simply picking up a copy of the Mirror International Weekly.

If you analyze the paper you will gain insight to his dreams and ambitions. The news section fulfilled his desire to keep Muslims informed of what was happening throughout every corner of the world. This universal worldwide perspective reflects the Islamic mindset he had of being a part of our global Ummah. His concern for the youth is vividly reflected in the youth corner of the paper. Br. Beig always appreciated a sophisticated, intellectual, well balanced, and non-sensationalist approach taken by an author of an opinion article, especially when dealing with the most striking of issues. The Centerpiece will always serve Muslims organizations, major Islamic personalities, Islamic concepts and issues which are not given the projection that they truly deserve. The centerpiece literally evens out the lopsidedness of the mainstream media. A witty cartoon which makes its point and injects a potent dosage of humor captures his sense of humor which when shared always enlightened one with a lesson to learn. The “What they say” (later renamed to ”Quotable Quotes”) section captures perfectly the type of information Br. Anver, an avid reader who paid very close attention to who is saying what, wanted Muslims to be aware of. The most important section to him clearly was the religion section, it is no secret that the Deen of Islam was his sole motivation, and...

Al Quran Gateway to the Past

Asalamualikum Brothers in Islam, the verse which I have recited for you is Verse 176 in Surah Al’Araf

.It can be translated as:
“So relate the story; perchance they may reflect.” (Quran 7:176)

Our only true source of knowledge of the past (before the prophet’s time) comes form the Quran itself.

In a verse of the Quran (S) says
We relate upon you this Qur’an, the best of the Stories from whatever we have revealed to you, (even though) you were from those who were unaware.(Joseph:12:3)

It is through the Quran we gain true knowledge of the origins of Mankind. In school they may teach you theories of evolution or savage men slowly becoming civilized but the reality of creation begins with the creation of Adam (A)

Theres One Way, Thats the Hardaway

U-4uVLv5iG4

On Feb. 24, 2006 the Orlando Magic waived Anfernee (Penny) Hardaway (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2343349) after obtaining his contract from the New York Knicks in a trade for Steve Francis. I must say this is the worst form of disrespect a seasoned veteran could receive.

Penny has appeared in 60 playoff games averaging 20.6 points and 6.2 assists. He made four straight All-Star appearances (1995-98) and has averaged 13.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.8 rebounds. Named to the All-NBA First Team in 1994-95 and 1995-96, and to the All-NBA Third Team in 1996-97. Averaged 31 points against the Miami Heat in the first round of the 1997 NBA Playoffs. A member of the gold medal-winning United States Olympic Basketball Team during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Appeared in the 1995 NBA Finals against the Houston Rockets. Named NBA Player of the Month for November, 1995. Named MVP of the inaugural Schick Rookie Game, scoring a game-high 22 points (8-9 FG, 4-6 FT), during the 1994 NBA All-Star Weekend in Minneapolis.

In case the video above didn't make it clear watch this one also (Mute first: Music with Cursing):

Man I love these clips of Penny SCHOOLING Jordan, Pippen, Kukoc, Kobe, Shaq, Jason Kidd and Iverson. Not to mention dunking on Robinson, Ewing, and I think one of the Davis brothers on the Pacers.. he got it the worst.

Work in Progress

I hate it when people stop posting on their blog and they come back and title a post I'm Back . That's corny, so don't be doing that. I was thinking about doing this big come back where I get Tariq (http://thastar.blogspot.com)to do a guest post, well inshallah he'll do one anyway. Since I last posted I've gone through some transitions. For those who don't know.. IM ENGAGED! Alhumdulilah and am set to get married on the last weekend of July. Post comments on Wedding preperation ideas. Yes brothers this is your chance to be J-Lo, ugh I mean my wedding planner. Since I last posted, I officially graduated from YM (http://www.ymsite.com)... which means I'm over the hill (go ahead kids call me uncle). I mentioned ILF, the Islamic Learning Foundation (http://www.islamiclearningfoundation.com) on my blog before. I am spending almost all my weekends there. This year at the ICNA Convention (http://www.icna.org) since I won't be doing anymore YM stuff, I'll be holding down the ILF Booth in the Bazaar.About the Blog itself.. update your RSS feeds because I've moved from Simple Blog to Joomla (http://www.joomla.com). In case you didn't notice the site is much more robust now. If you click on any images itt'll take you to a bigger version of the image in the gallery (index.php?option=com_gallery2 Itemid=27). There is also a lil mini-forum (index.php?option=com_joomlaboard Itemid=29) on the site now. At the end of each post there is a link to add comments (no user registration required). I don't know if I'm more excited about the engagement or the new blog (ha, just kidding yaar). Also look for some cooky things to come. I've started designing my own Joomla templates... inshallah that means theres good things to come! I'm have to repost all the old user...

Ramadan in the Hood

This morning I dropped my sister to her work, parked my car near my workplace and headed over to The Av (Jamaica Ave) I was looking for the Retro Air Max Penny B's in Knicks colors.. I always wanted Pennys but they were always too expensive for me back in the 90s. So now here was my chance to own a pair. So I went to like 10 stores.... the knicks version were sold out everywhere...From Jimmy Jazz to VIM, to Dr. Jays... My only hope was the smaller ghettoer stores. As I walked from street to street I couldn't help but notice that posters and flyers for 50 Cent's new movie were everywhere! I was like woah there is no way you could not know about this stupid movie. From Busses to even the counter tops in the smallest stores.. Jamaica is his hometown though... Funny I always thought Jamaica was my hometown! I was literally born there... Back to the story... I go into one of these clothing/sneaker/suit stores and I hear english which sounds almost biblical being played in the speakers.. as I listen to the words... I think that sounds like something that would be in the Quran, next thing I know I hear some hardcore recitation! It was the Qur'an! The store owner who had a very nice size store was blasting Qur'an with english translation... mashallah... now thats some serious dawah right there! Then I went to this other store which was very ghettoish although it was nicely designed.. it had super hood products... the store was covered in more 50 Cent posters... so I go in there... and I walk by a person...

Al-hamdo Lilla-he NahmaduhuWanastaeenohu Wa Nastaghfiru-hu WaNauoozu billa-hee min shoroore anfosena Maiy-yah-dehiLaahu faLaa mudil-lala-hu wa maiy-yudlilLaa-hu faLaa ha-deya la hu wa ash-hado allah illa-ha illala-hu wa ash hadu anna Muhammadan Abduhu wa rasoolu All Praise is for Allah. We praise and glorify him and seek His help and forgiveness. And seek refuge from the evils of our desires. Whomsoever Allah gives guidance none can mislead him. And whomsoever Allah misleads none can guide him. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is his servant and apostle.Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam, the Holy Month of Ramadan is quickly approaching. We may or may not enter this month with the proper mindset. But we definitely will quickly find out where we stand and we will come to know what activities exist in our lives that should not. Because while we are fasting, we may be about to say or do something improper, and we might remember, Oh I am fasting, I shouldn’t be doing this. But how can we get a head start on this?
